Studio Arthur Casas creates a boutique in São Paulo inspired by Brazilian modernism for the brand + 55design

Designed by local architect Arthur Casas and his team, the exquisite + 55design store in São Paulo showcases Brazilian modernism, with its clean lines, perforated walls and lush vegetation made up of native Brazilian species. Meanwhile, the neutral and minimalist landscape inside the store allows for a flexible layout, capable of presenting varied displays of furniture and objects.

The monochrome materiality in the walls, ceiling and floor gives the desired character of “blank canvas” to this project. The earthy color palette is complemented by the soft green of the permeable facade. Developed especially for + 55design, this creates a dialogue with landscaping by Leandro Reis of The Lapa Company.

With light as its architecture’s greatest ally, the store becomes a tropical exhibition space. The hot sun flows through an amorphous opening between the ground floor and the mezzanine. The glass roof also allows abundant natural lighting, illuminating the spaces and highlighting the textures of the furniture.

Casas wanted to create a space that lets the products be the protagonists. He explains: “The project was conceived as a search for solutions to highlight the furniture, not the architecture.

Inside the building, orthogonal partitions, made of metal and suede, underline “a surprising experience”, explains Casas. Vegetation, made up of native Brazilian species, invades the retail space to create a contemporary, luxurious yet sophisticated aesthetic, where nature and architecture meet. A built-in artificial lighting system to simulate natural light adds to the welcoming ambience.

Furniture designed by Arthur Casas is available in store, including a line of outdoor pieces, ‘Golf’, made of wood, aluminum and plastic mesh. §
