Chinese studio MAD Architects has unveiled its design for The Star office building in Hollywood, which will include a funicular.

Shaped like a flattened sphere, the 22-story office building is proposed for a site at 6061 Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Named The Star, the building is intended to transform the Hollywood skyline and was designed as an office building for a global entertainment company.

MAD Architects designed a distinctive office building for Hollywood

“Hollywood has long been an iconic center of culture and creativity,” said Ma Yansong, founding director of MAD Architects.

“The Star will be Hollywood’s iconic new landmark and will continue to inspire audiences and creativity.”

The office building has a rounded shape that has been influenced by the curvilinear shapes of neighboring structures, including the Griffith Observatory on Mount Hollywood, the Capitol Records building, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Cinerama Dome.

The block will feature outdoor terraces, or “gardens of heaven” on the 10th and 17th floors designed by Los Angeles-based SALT Landscape Architects.

It will be topped with a closed roof restaurant, an event space and a viewpoint.

This space will be accessed by a “funicular cable rail” system that will run on curved rails that wrap around the building in the shape of a flattened sphere.

According to the developers of the building, it was “specially designed for the post-Covid environment”.

With outdoor spaces and terraces on the ground floor, the building will be designed to be the first WELL certified building in Los Angeles.

According to the LA Times, the developers submitted the building to the city’s planning department this week and hope to complete the building by 2026.

MAD Architects, which is one of China’s best-known architecture studios, was founded by Yansong in Beijing in 2004. Today it has offices in Los Angeles, New York and Rome.

The studio recently completed its first project in the United States, a residential building in Beverly Hills wrapped in the “tallest living wall in the United States.”

Other projects he completed last year included a cloud-shaped science museum and kindergarten with a red-roofed playground.
