Our decarbonization team is at the heart of discussions with the government to create the political conditions that can stimulate business investment. We use the strength of our extensive network to help our members reduce emissions from their own operations and lead by example in the global race to protect the planet.

Located within the decarbonization team and working for our Senior Proposition Manager, this role will be responsible for leading the delivery of our proposition to members – helping to design and deliver products and services that enable them to become more durable. The incumbent will be responsible for driving campaigns to secure strong business commitments to net zero emissions, developing practical guidance for businesses on key aspects of their sustainability journey, and building a compelling new membership network to directors of sustainable development.

Main responsibilities

Expand CBI’s offering for companies seeking to achieve net zero, including:

  • Monitor the establishment and achievement of sound scientific goals among IWC members, regularly tracking progress.
  • Articulate practical steps businesses can take on their journey to reduce emissions and understand how to factor nature into their net zero strategies.
  • Launch and animate the new CBI network for Chief Sustainability Officers to support them in their decarbonization goals
  • Proactively identify opportunities to demonstrate the role of business in achieving net zero
  • Drafting and presentation of documents for high-level boards and committees
  • Drafting internal briefings for meetings, demonstrating commercial sensitivity to the political context

Help develop a range of products and services to support and enable members’ sustainability priorities:

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of companies’ net zero strategies and initiatives to improve their own sustainability performance, including drivers, challenges and financial impacts.
  • Work with the Senior Proposition Manager and extended team to design and deliver products that support practical business action on decarbonization and sustainability. These can be how-to guides, policy explainers, workshops

Build strong internal and external relationships, including:

  • Act as the first point of contact within the CBI for members, staff and other stakeholders on the company’s net zero commitments, including advising your Line Manager and Director
  • Meet regularly with members to understand their progress towards net zero and other sustainability commitments to inform the CBI proposal and feed into broader decarbonization policy work
  • Work proactively with colleagues in the decarbonization team and beyond to fully exploit synergies with other policy areas, as well as business, membership and media opportunities
  • Act as the CBI’s representative on key business and policy platforms, to articulate the UK business perspective.

Knowledge and experience

  • Good understanding and enthusiasm for decarbonization/sustainability policy, advocacy and trade enforcement. At least some experience on these subjects is required, and seniority of appointment will depend on experience
  • Knowledge of the policy-making process within the UK government and general interest in public policy
  • Writing and presenting experience for different audiences
  • Familiarity with how business works and the business pressures business leaders face.
