The Center Pompidou, in collaboration with Mathaf, presents the Farid Belkahia exhibition in Paris
The Center Pompidou – Paris, in collaboration with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, and the Farid Belkahia Foundation in Marrakech, is currently presenting the exhibition Farid Belkahia: Pour une nouvelle modernité, curated by Michel Gauthier.
The exhibition, presented at the Center Pompidou, allows visitors to discover the work of Farid Belkahia (1934-2014), considered one of the main founders of artistic modernity in Morocco, and more generally in the Arab world.
The exhibition traces the main sequences of Belkahia’s work, from Prague and the Expressionist period to works on animal skins and sign poetry, including the use of copper and the founding period of the school of Casablanca. It brings together nearly 140 works – paintings, drawings, sculptures, skins and brass.
In a statement, Mathaf director Abdellah Karroum said: “Mathaf is honored to partner with the Center Pompidou to present this exhibition celebrating the life and works of pioneer artist Farid Belkahia. The curatorial perspective traces the fascinating evolution of its innovative process and its reference to African heritage. Mathaf is committed to showcasing the works of artists from the region and this important collaboration allows us to present Belkahia’s work to the Parisian and international public.
One of the great aesthetic achievements of the postcolonial era is the production of Belkahia. It is distinguished by its conception of modernity in dialogue with vernacular traditions and ancestral art, breaking with many Western avant-garde who advocated a tabula rasa.
He was born in Marrakech and moved to Paris in 1955 where he attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. [National School of Fine Arts] before moving to Prague in 1959 to study scenography, where he remained until 1962.
Mathaf’s collection features around 100 of Belkahia’s finest works. Mathaf also developed the bilingual (French and English) catalog for the exhibition in partnership with the Center Pompidou.
Farid Belkahia: Pour une nouvelle modernité is on view at the Gallery of the Museum and at the Gallery of graphic art, Center Pompidou until July 19, 2021.
